About This Site

This is an independent guide to the Tromso Northern Lights tours that run between late September and early April. It exists because six listings can look identical on a booking page while differing on the things that decide your night: how many people share the minibus, whether there is a toilet on board, how far the guide is allowed to drive, and what happens when the sky stays shut. The six tours we track sit on the homepage.

Why this site exists

Read four Tromso aurora listings in a row and they blur into the same paragraph about a magical Arctic night. None of them tells you that one operator excludes guests over 70, that another asks you in writing to use the toilet before departure because there will not be one for six hours, or that the cheapest ticket on the page carries the most reviews of any aurora tour in the city.

So we put those columns side by side and wrote down the parts the listings bury, including Northern Lights Safari's own statement that the aurora cannot be guaranteed and that it does not refund. Knowing that before you book changes how you plan the week rather than how you feel on the last night.

How the tours get checked

Six operators sell aurora chases out of Tromso through GetYourGuide, and all six are on this site. Nothing was filtered out for commercial reasons: dropping one would hide either the cheapest ticket or the smallest group. What gets verified before a tour stays listed:

The operator's own listing, read in full, for group size, vehicle, ages and pickup terms
The know-before-you-go and not-suitable-for notes, which is where the toilets and age limits live
Prices in US dollars on the date shown in the tour list, converted at that day's published rate
Recent reviews read for the complaints rather than the praise, including the ones from cloudy weeks
The meeting point, which in Tromso is a hotel door or a car park rather than a landmark

What we do not do

We do not sell tours, take bookings or handle payments. We are not an agency, and we are not the official site of any operator named here. Your booking, your money and your customer service sit with the operator or the platform you book through.

We also do not rank operators by what they pay. Nobody on this page has bought a position, and no operator read the text before it went live.

How the site is paid for

The site is free to read. When you book through a link here, the booking platform pays a commission and your price stays the same. That money funds the research and nothing else. It does not decide the order of the tours, the wording of the comparison table, or which operator gets described as expensive.

The honest version of the trade: we earn when you book, so we have a reason to keep you reading. The only way to keep readers is to say plainly when a $159 ticket earns its price and when the $61 one does the same job.

Marte Kristoffersen has lived in Tromso through nine aurora seasons and has ridden along on chases with most of the companies working out of the city, including one night that ended past the Finnish border at three in the morning.
